It seems that Google is beginning a large push for their Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) technology today, with the announcement of a dev program for Gmail and now AMP Stories for their search.
While AMP isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, with Google acting as the intermediary in between publishers and end users, the speed at which content is delivered can’t be argued. Web pages that normally take tens of seconds can load in under a second, and take less data to transmit – a big consideration for people on less than generous mobile data plans. That speed is coming to publishers with AMP Stories. Put simply, according to Google, AMP Stories is ‘A visual-driven format for evolving news consumption on mobile’.
You’ll see AMP Stories in your mobile search results, they’ll be visually rich which includes images, videos and graphics to help tell a story. When you search for a topic, they’ll show up on your mobile device and you’ll be able to get to the content fast. Results will show up in an easily accessible carousel like this:
The Developer preview for AMP stories is starting today with tutorials and documentation available for publishers to begin using. A number of publishers including CNN, Conde Nast, Hearst, Mashable, Meredith, Mic, Vox Media, and The Washington Post are already on-board creating AMP Stories.
