Samsung has today pulled off a coup in the mobile payments space in Australia, with Samsung Pay now available on all of the ‘Big Four’ banks, with National Australia Bank (NAB), now on board. The bank has also said that Google Pay support is coming soon.

As of today, NAB customers can now use Samsung Pay to make contactless payments on their Samsung devices using their NAB Visa cards.

NAB Executive General Manager of Consumer Lending, Angus Gilfillan has pointed to the broad range of options that NAB customers now have with NAB also offering their own digital payments wallet NAB Pay on Android, as well as offering Fitbit, and Garmin Pay. Mr Gilfillan has also said that Google Pay support will be available to NAB customer ‘very soon’.

Speaking about the addition of Samsung Pay, Mr Gilfillan said

We are continuing to invest in giving our customers the best digital payments experience. We know Australians increasingly want to pay for their purchases quickly and conveniently. The growth in ‘tap and pay’, and take up of NAB Pay since we launched it two years ago, has been remarkable. By adding Samsung Pay, we’re giving our customers more choice in digital wallets.

To use Samsung Pay, NAB customers will need to have a compatible Samsung device, which includes a broad range of Samsung Galaxy S, A, J and Note series phones including the recently released Galaxy S9 and S9+. NAB customers can even use Samsung Pay on the Gear S2, S3 and Gear Sport smartwatches.

As well as adding their NAB Visa card to the Samsung Pay app, customers can also add in their loyalty cards for ease of use.

How is Google Pay not available yet! I understand that NAB isn’t adding Apple Pay because “cough cough Apply Pay has fees”, I mean “Apple won’t let us offer our own app that doesn’t even work all the time on Android, on the iPhone”. But NAB is literally offering other small platforms before the 2 biggest, Google Pay and Apple Pay…

Come on NAB, wake up to yourselves!
