OnePlus hasn’t always had the best reputation for providing software updates for their phones, however they’ve taken that on-board and are working to improve it. As part of that work, they’ve today announced that they’ll be updating the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T directly to Android P when released, missing the Android 8.1 update altogether.

OnePlus was announced as a partner for the Android P beta when it was announced at Google I/O back in May, although a specific phone wasn’t announced as the OnePlus 6, which it’s compatible with, wasn’t yet announced officially. OnePlus has said that the Android P update would be made available to the OnePlus 6 first, with the OnePlus 5/T and OnePlus 3/3T following suit soon after.

The news comes on the heels of the release of the latest OxygenOS update (OxygenOS 5.0.4) for OnePlus 3 and 3T last week, which brought a number of improvements including the latest Android security update and improvements to the camera.

Google released the latest Beta for Android P only last week, and is expected to launch the official update for Android P next month. OnePlus hasn’t said how long it will take to start rolling the update out to their handsets, however they have been working closely with Google so it shouldn’t take too long – but we’ll have to wait for official timings.

Brilliant news. This puts OnePlus ahead of many of their competitors. Well done.
