OPPO has been continuing to work on cracking the market in Australia and have released a new device, the OPPO Reno 10 5G.
It’s got dual hybrid/micro-SD (SIM or MicroSD) capability, 67W PD3/SuperVOOC charging (included inbox) and that fantastic 6.7” 10-bit/1.07 billion colour, 120Hz AMOLED screen.
Now OPPO isn’t a stranger to us and certainly I have to say I have reviewed a fair few OPPO phones, with my last being last years (2022) OPPO Find X5 Pro which I found could have been easily a Samsung and even potential Apple killer, though maybe not an iPhone killer but definitely a worthy competitor to Samsung’s Galaxy S line up.
So when OPPO opted to release a new phone, I wanted to give the Reno 10 5G a try and see if it can be a worthy competitor to its peers. Can the OPPO Reno 10 5G truly be a competitor; out shining and out powering its competitors, let’s have a look shall we.
What’s in the box?
In the box you will find the device itself, a 1 meter USB-C to USB A cable, 67W wall charger, usual user manuals and booklets and a SIM tray tool.
The design and under the hood
The OPPO Reno 10 5G comes with a 6.7-inch 3D AMOLED display (2412 x 1080, 394ppi) that offers a 120Hz refresh rate and I have to say turning on the device and seeing the display operating, it’s just very stunning and clear.
The front display also houses an under display fingerprint sensor whilst the top middle houses a 32MP selfie camera which is best described as a punch hole in the display.
The right hand side of the Reno 10 5G houses the power.standby button and above this is volume rocker (up and down).
The bottom of the Reno 10 5G houses the SIM and microSD card tray on the left hand side, next to this is the USB-C charging port in the center whilst on the right hand side is where you will find the external speaker grill.
The left hand side doesn’t have anything on it whilst the top the small microphones to help make calls clearer and drown out any background noise.
Flipping over the back, whilst it is made of a plastic and matte looking Lilac colour, which looks absolutely stunning if I say so, its so pleasant to see and view. The rear left hand side top of the device, houses the camera housing which protrudes out from the rear cover for about 2-3mm houses the triple rear cameras which are made up of 64MP camera lens, 32MP telephoto lens and an 8MP ultra wide angle lens., with the OPPO logo located towards the rear right hand of of the back of the Reno 10 5G.
Under the hood, you will find the Reno 10 5G is powered by an octa-core MediaTek Dimensity 7050 processor, ARM Mail-G68 MC4 GPU alongside 8GB RAM and 256GB of onboard storage which can be expanded to 1TB. We will go further into this later on in the review to see how it took a grueling couple of weeks on the Ausdroid review bench.
Furthermore, the Reno 10 5G comes with Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax), Bluetooth 5.3 Low Energy (LE) and GPS.
Lights, Camera, Action!
The OPPO Reno 10 5G comes with a triple rear camera set up that is made up of a 64MP camera lens, 32MP telephoto lens and an 8MP ultra wide angle lens.
The settings that are available in the camera app itself include Night, video, photo, portrait, pro, extra HD, Panorama, slo-mo, Timelapse, dual view video, sticker and text scanner.
Photos taken on the rear camera are quite vivid with colour. The tone and colour are not overly saturated and close to real life, though sadly, the OIS has been removed so you’re going to need to camera completely still to get the perfect image or video.
32MP Selfie camera is also great with camera image, colours, and saturation are true to life and can offer those clear social media shots.
Performance and software
As stated in the design section, the OPPO Reno 10 5G is powered under the hood by octa-core MediaTek Dimensity 7050 processor, ARM Mail-G68 MC4 GPU alongside 8GB RAM and 256GB of onboard storage which can be expanded to 1TB.
In terms of performance, the Reno 10 5G is able to multitask quite well with no stutter or lagging between various apps like Gmail, YouTube, streaming services apps, social media and more. Even playing games the display is bright and the performance were
Though my issue is the abundant bloatware apps that are installed, such as their own calendar, clock apps. Purely and surely these apps could be done away by the Google equivalent. Furthermore, I noticed that OPPO seems to have downloaded additional apps, mainly all games that I never downloaded or installed like royal match, fill the glass, family mini mart and more. All up it would seem an additional 9 to 10 apps that I had to try uninstall if I could.
This is were some of the lower price and catches come in and I do implore OPPO and any other company that download apps without asking first or duplicating other apps instead of the Google ones, please rethink this idea. Just follow the K.I.S.S philosophy – Keep It Simple Stupid!
The Reno 10 5G runs Android 13 with the usual ColorOS 13.1 running over the top and I have to say ColorOS has improved a lot from its early days but again something that will no doubt evolve overtime.
Battery life
In terms of battery life, the OPPO Reno 10 5G comes with a whopping 5,000 mAh non removable battery on board which can be charged thanks to the included 67W charger which can charge the device up quickly within half an hour from close to 10% to 100%.
The battery is able to last throughout the day with medium usage between social media, watching YouTube videos or streaming apps like Netflix, Stan or more, emails, messaging apps. Taking the device off charge at about 7-7:30am and returning home anywhere between 6pm and 8pm, I still had anywhere between 40-60% battery charge left at the end of the day without needing to charge. Though with higher usage this could be a bit less battery life at the end of day.
Furthermore, OPPO has included a feature which helps to extend the life of the battery, thanks to the smart battery health algorithm alongside a battery health engine which can help extend the recharge cycle life to over 1600 that can still hold 80% of the charge. This means that the Reno 10 5G could potentially last a lot longer than many other smart phones without needing to be constantly wired to your wall charger over time.
Should you consider buying one?
The OPPO Reno 10 5G does provide a compelling offer to anyone who wants 5G, a great camera, excellent battery life and super fast charging all in a neat package. OPPO has gone far and beyond my expectations and that is a good thing.
Granted there are a couple of things that I would like OPPO to look at changing such as adopting more basic Google apps alongside removing or not downloading apps and games it thinks I might want but that is just minor compared to the overall package and experience for the average user.
