HMD Global has introduced a new “Digital Detox Mode” as part of its latest flagship smartphone, the HMD Skyline, which is now available with a software update for Android 14. The new functionality arrives just in time for World Mental Health Day, offering users tools to manage their smartphone usage and enhance their mental well-being.

The Digital Detox Mode is built into the device’s software and can be activated via a widget on the home screen. Users can customise the level of detox based on their needs, from blocking specific apps and contacts to setting schedules for focused breaks. The mode offers two key features: a “Soft Lock” for short breaks, allowing users to deactivate it early if needed, and a “Hard Lock” for more extended periods of disconnection, where the detox cannot be interrupted unless the device is rebooted.

This functionality is designed to address the growing concerns about the effects of constant smartphone use. HMD’s research highlights that 42% of Australians have already engaged in digital detoxes, and 56% are considering doing so in the future. The findings also revealed that nearly one-third of Australians feel that doom scrolling is negatively impacting their mental health, while 29% are overwhelmed by the pressure to stay in constant contact.

With this new feature, HMD is positioning itself at the forefront of the conversation about healthier smartphone habits, offering users greater control over their device usage during this critical time for mental health awareness.
