Discount supermarket chain Aldi, has released their special buys and the headline release is a 7″ ‘Kids’ tablet priced at $99.99 which will be running Android 4.4.
The tablet doesn’t appear to be manufactured by Bauhn or Medion – the two manufacturers normally associated with the German supermarket chain, and a reverse image search yields very little.
There’s very little information with regards to specification in the tablet beyond the 7″ 1024×600 resolution screen, 1.5GHz Dual-Core CPU and 4GB of storage but with microSD card expansion(SD card not included). The tablet comes with a rubberised case, similar to that seen recently on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Kids edition tablet, though with a cheaper price tag.
Software wise, it does with Android 4.4, as well as ‘Educational fun games for toddlers, pre-schoolers and older kids’. There’s also an included ad-blocker and in-app purchase mechanism which prevents un-authorised purchases. There’s even a password protected child lock and time limiter.
Aside from the Android 4.4, there are cheaper 7″ Tablets at retail in Australia, so it’s a bit of a gamble on a tablet which doesn’t even have a manufacturer associated. The manufacturer should definitely be readily apparent when they go on-sale in Aldi stores this Wednesday, so if you’re interested check it out.
Just grabbed one and it is great value for money. Fast and responsive. For those wondering, the play store app is now located on the homescreen and listed with all in other apps in the apps menu.
Note: When you first turn it on, if you set it up as a kids tablet, then it will use the kidoz launcher and launch straight into the kidoz app – where you will not find any of the regular Android apps. You will need to close the Kidozapp and it will go back to the standard Android homescreen.
I’m writing this using said tablet. Its fantastic, however I can’t seem to locate the Google play store anywhere!! This could be a problem…
Did you ever find the Play Store?
