Acer unleashes a new range of 13″ Chromebooks – including a FullHD version

Acer has taken the ChromeOS ball and run with it, releasing one of the most successful Chromebooks to date with the C720, but that success has made them hungry and today they’ve announced a new series of Chromebooks – the Chromebook 13.

As the name suggests the Chromebook 13 comes with a 13¨ Screen, but unlike previous Chromebooks before them, you don’t have to have a 1366×768 resolution screen – although you can if you want to – you can instead opt for a FullHD 1920×1080 display. There are in fact three models of the Chromebook 13 available, the first two with 2GB RAM and 16GB SSD, both with the 13″ Display, but you get to choose your resolution. The lower resolution version will cost US$279, but for an extra US$20 grab the FullHD version. The other option is the big kahuna, which gives you 4GB of RAM and a 32GB SSD for storage for just US$379.

The Chromebook 13 is powered by a relative newcomer to the Chromebook world – the NVidia Tegra K1 processor which includes the NVIDIA Kepler GPU with 192 CUDA cores. As well as perceived performance, the NVidia K1 is showing promise in battery life tests, indeed Acer are advising that the 1366×768 resolution Chromebook 13 can last up to 13 hours, while the 1080P version will offer 11 hours – not bad.

Other options on the Chromebook appear, from the pictures supplied, to be limited to HDMI out, as well as 2xUSB 3.0 ports and a Headphone jack.

The Chromebook 13 is available to pre-order in the US from today, but there’s been no word from the Australian arm of Acer as yet. We’ve reached out to see if these models will hit our shores and hope to update as soon as we hear back.
