In 2014 I delved into the world of the connected toothbrush with the Oral-B Black 7000, at Mobile World Congress Oral-B announced a new connected toothbrush called the Oral-B Genius will be coming later this year.
The Oral-B Genius is a connected toothbrush that improves on previous models offering updated software and hardware. The Genius will still offer pressure control and a timer – you should be brushing for at least 2 minutes twice a day – but the new model improves the sensitivity, updating to triple pressure sensors. The Genius will also now offer a first of its kind feature: Position Detection Technology.
Position Detection Technology uses sensors as well as a video camera with video recognition built into the Genius to actually track where the toothbrush is in your mouth. You’ll basically learn how to brush your teeth properly.
Dentist Dr. Jose Nart, said of the new position detection technology incorporated in the Oral-B Genius
Patients are not brushing their teeth correctly, even though they think they are; they brush too hard, do not brush long enough, and miss zones of the mouth. This new brushing system helps us coach patients to brush properly, and improve these three main areas of patient brushing behaviors that affect their oral health. The Oral-B GENIUS and App take digital guidance to the next level by bringing awareness to what’s actually happening each time users brush and giving them real-time guidance to improve every brushing session. Now our patients can continue what’s started in the dental office at home – a professionally guided brushing routine.
Like other Oral-B toothbrushes, the Genius will offer the usual Oral-B Oscillating-Rotating-Pulsating Technology to clean your teeth that you’re familiar with but the addition of these smart features will make for cleaner teeth.
Of course a new smart toothbrush also needs a connected app and Oral-B will launch their new updated app on Google Play prior to the launch of the Genius in July. The app will track your teeth cleaning history, have a timer and also display the sensor details about how hard you’re pressing on your teeth.
Pricing for the toothbrush in the Australian market will be released closer to launch but you can pre-order the toothbrush on Amazon in Spain for €225 for the Oral-B Genius 8000 and €280 for the Oral-B Genius 9000.
I have the black 7000 model, the app looks nice but doesn’t work very well – often half way through brushing my teeth it’ll just stop recording. I’m hoping this updated software for the new brush comes to me too.
