Google’s Developer Preview program has since it was introduced with Android L at Google I/O in 2014 been exculusively available for recent Nexus devices. But it could be going further if evidence on the Android N developer preview site is to be believed.
The current Android N developer preview can currently be joined by anyone sporting a Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6 or Nexus 9. An eagle eyed Redditor, who goes by the screen name FUNExtreme has seen some interesting code, which is currently marked as a comment, on the Developer Preview page that suggests devices other than Nexus may see some action on the preview stating “more supported devices, including devices from OEM partners”.
This is merely conjecture as the reference is vague enough to mean anything you care to take a stab at, for instance does it refer to Android One devices, there’s a number of ‘OEM partners’ there? Or could it apply to OEMs such as Samsung, Huawei and LG (perhaps focussed on previous Nexus Manufacturers)? Or then again is Google trolling us?
Hopefully it is an indication that some of the bigger OEM manufacturers are onboard for the trial but only time will tell us for sure.
