Google’s newest app is only just arriving in Google Play for download for most people, but there’s already talk of new features, with audio only calls apparently on the list.
According to Amit Fulay, Product Lead for Communications at Google the feature is ‘coming soon’. The ‘announcement’ came in the comments section of the Google+ post that Mr Fulay made the other day announcing the service was available. As the commenter who asked the question about audio only calls in Duo points out, an audio only option is definitely a need for users with limited roaming data.
There is the debate on whether an audio only option in Duo is even necessary with the service tied to your phone number. Traditionally most people get more call minutes than data, but if you’re on a free Wi-Fi connection and have no minutes or data left on your monthly plan, it would be a nice option to have.
Duo is now available in Google Play if you want to try it out, so head over to Google Play and let us know your thoughts.
Audio only would be good just so I can hold the phone to my head and switch to a private conversation without headphones.
Installed it and looked to see if there is anyone I can call. Phil Tann is my only option. 🙂 I have no idea why I have his phone number.
The 3G/4G symbol is active while in a video call, even though i was connected to wifi. Tried it this morning.
I believe it uses it as fall back and switches between networks if one slows down or becomes unavailable. This is to maintain a fluid video experience.
also the fact that international phone calls would become a lot cheaper using this !
I wonder how it will compare to Skype.
