Before today, and actually still for us here in Australia, if you wanted to switch from an iPhone to an Android device all you had to do was follow 3 how-to guides and you’d be swapped over, easy right? Let’s take a look a just one of those guides steps.
Move your music from iTunes.
- Make sure that your iPhone or iPad is fully synced to iTunes on your computer. Your music should all be backed up on your computer when this is done.
- Install Google Play Music Manager on your computer. Music Manager will upload your iTunes music to the cloud. You can download Music Manager here.
- Finish setting up your Google Play account by creating a Google Wallet account*.
I mean easy right, you just need an app, and a computer, and some software, and then do some stuff? I doubt even the most dedicated of switches would stick with it, let alone the less dedicated. That all changed today with new powers coming to the Google Drive app for iOS.
The enlightened switcher can now use the Drive app to move over all of their Photos, Calendar event and Contacts, just Tap Settings, Tap Backup, Tap START BACKUP and you’re done. Obviously, if you’re moving over your photos it could take a while, so perhaps just do the other steps first and get started and then sync your photos later.
It’s worth noting, though, that this does not appear to take your music across from iOS to Android; you’d still have to do that the hard way, manually., but there are options like Google Play Music All Access, Spotify, etc if you prefer your music to live in the cloud.
Unfortunately, this appears to be region restricted, we had to use a VPN to even view the Android Switch site and see the new version of the website. We’ve got no idea why such an important and simple tool would be region restricted but it appears it is, at least for now.
