In reference to the ‘Australian tax’, the $199 price tag does not include each the tax of the US state it will be shipped to as they are all different. That plus gst plus market demand plus many other things make up the price difference. $50 ain’t bad compared to other things like digital games on steam…
What you are forgetting is US sales tax in CA is amounts to $17.41 I know because I have just ordered one plus $13.99 shipping so total cost is $230.40 USD then I am paying another $50 to ship to New Zealand. I hope to get the US shipping changed from CA to Oregon and avoid sales tax.
Can anyone confirm that the AUD cost is $249 plus $20 shipping so total is $269 AUD?
I went to checkout and the shipping is indeed $20 so the total would be $269 for the 8gb model
Im confused by this tablet…am I going to be able to install normal apps like evernote, airdroid, dolphin HD etc on this or only games, movies, books, magazines, music?
You’d be able to install anything you can get from an online app store..
What this tablet won’t let you do is sideload as apparently it has no external memory support by default. No MicroSD, and no USB external memory sticks by default, though that USB host lack might be able to be worked around.
This is just speculation, but as the Galaxy Nexus was given USB host by those kind folks over at xda, I imagine it will at least be possible with the Nexus 7. Without it, google have pretty much &$%^%$ the pooch on this device. Not saying its not a bargain, just that many people expect more storage capabilities than what are on offer here.
why would you need an sdcard to side load apps?
wouldn’t you just use adb to install them?
Of course you can 😛 it is an android tablet first and foremost – they are just pushing their play store integration. The UI will will vary insignificantly to any ICS tablet currently available (if you discount the phone vs tablet UI issue). We are not talking Android 5.0 after all.
Devices section isn’t showing in play store for me. Galaxy s3
Try the web version … not sure that it works on your device.
it doesn’t seem to have hdmi out or a full size usb port. Is that correct? Do you reckon it would support a usb flash drive with an adapter? Would be nice to be able to stream movies to a tv via hdmi. I guess you could just use dlna…need awifi tv though.
The Whole point is to use it with the Nexus Q Home Entertainment box which isnt available outside the US. With Root access and an OTG cable hopefully the USB Stickmount app will work to expand storage.I would most likely guess that the MicroUSB is NOT an MHL adaptor either.
Does anyone have an answer to the above question? Can the micro USB port on the Nexus 7 be used to expand storage and to transfer files?
I’m just not sure if using the phone interface for a 7 inch tablet is the right decision but i suppose i shall have to just wait and see.
Yeah this is one of my mine gripes at present (alongside no SD / hdmi out). But who would buy a nexus product without the wherewithal to head over to xda and root / flash to your hearts content. If Google don’t fix it and give us the portrait tab UI we really want on a tablet, then you can be sure the devs will 🙂
Pre ordered mine…no other Android will compare because skinned Android destroys the experience
You don’t own a Galaxy SIII obviously. The skin makes it better.
Ordered! It’s still very cheap for a device even if we do get the Australia tax.
Ordered. Charged $18 postage to Sydney. After using my sisters Galaxy tab7.7 with just dual core, I love the size and want the pure google experience for a change. And JellyBean
Without additional storage i might have to pass on this.
Its getting frustrating all the manufacturers leaving this out. Heck I wouldnt mind if hey had a 32gb or 64gb model but 8/16 is pretty pathetic for 2012.
Um 249 US for the 16GB say the same here, plus GST is $275, add the $25 google play voucher there is 300, they do have to ship here as well so yes it’s exactly right. stop bitching people.
So annoyed. Why can’t Australia have the same bloody price as the rest of the world. -_-
The price in US dollars does not include GST.. The price here does include GST.
The device has to be shipped and supported here.
We get a credit at the market.
GOOGLE IS LOOKING AFTER US!!! They are saying the price gouging is not acceptable, it is acceptable to cover costs etc for sale outside of a massive market like the US.
There is no Australia tax on this one we are doing very well. We are paying in the end the SAME as the US.
Ahhhhhh okay that makes me feel better now. 🙂
Thanks for clearing that up! ^_^
Please show your maths – mine does not jibe with what you are saying:
$199 AUS + 10% GST = $219
We are paying $30 extra
Shipping is not included in the price (+ ~$20)
No mention of Google Music in Australia that I hear. You hear anything?
Why are you waiting for Google Music? This has been discussed many times, it is freely usable in Aus, just need a US proxy / DNS to sign up for it… Hotspot shield is free (although questionable from a security POV), and unblock-us.com offer a free trial period.
I have a Music account and work for a US account to get stuff via a work connection but I just want it to work the way it should work!
Oh fair enough 🙂
Try unotelly.com , faster and better service all around
GST doesn’t account for the massive difference in price. Neither does shipping. Aussies screwed again
How much GST?
Charlie, GST prices are supposed to be non-GST plus 10 percent.
To get the non-GST price from a GST price, the calc is:
non-GST price = GST price – (GST price divided by 11)
Oh i though GST was not included in the 249/299 price. Thanks
According to some posts in the Whirlpool thread discussing this tablet, shipping seems to be about $20AUD, added to the purchase price. So that’s in addition to the Australia Tax we are being fleeced with.
Added to that, also in the thread, the Australian sales and stock is being run through Google Asia Pacific, in Singapore. So the exchange rate sequence is USD to Singapore to AUD.

300 is a great price. Don’t be a tight a*s. You want to tell me what you can get on the market like this at this price? Nothing. Maybe a dodgy playbook or Toshiba thrive. Suck it up Google’s margins on this will be incredibly thin
People like you tolerating higher prices for Australia are the reason we pay higher prices in Australia. Prices adapt to whatever the market will tolerate. Look at Russian game prices versus Aussie game prices. Australia tolerate the high prices so they charge high prices. Russians don’t tolerate it so they get cheap games. We need less tolerance in this country – not more.
People like are you are delusional to think you influence prices
That’s right spruik intolerance. That’s something we really need. :/ There’s lot of reasons for the higher prices, but in reality, the biggest one is that we have a smaller market. You might be aware that when companies order in bulk, they get a better price. Well, as a country we order in “bulk”, but we have as many chains ordering as they have in the US, but each of those US chains order enormous amount by comparison (roughly 10-15x). Sheer economics suggests that until our demand exceeds, or even meets the US, we’ll be charged more. And in Russia… Read more »
What about software like adobe creative suite? A$4,344 while it is US$2.599. That is for a digital download, no shipping cost nothing and some how they can justify greater cost, and not by a small margin? That is the problem!
Doesn’t let you check out yet – “We’re sorry, there was an error. Please try again later.”
Just ordered mine, all good, a few others are saying they`ve ordered successfully as well, try again now.
Ye its working, thanks!
