The Sony XZ Premium is a good phone (I swear the review is coming shortly), and it’s getting better today for Netflix users with High Dynamic Range (HDR) support now available.

The phone has just been added to the list of phones which support HDR – it’s a short list consisting of just the Xperia XZ Premium. The LG G6 was announced in May as the first Dolby Vision compatible phone, with Dolby Vision of course a proprietary ‘Extreme’ version of HDR.

Playing HDR content on your Xperia XZ Premium will require version 5.0 of the Netflix app for Android, the right Netflix plan if you want the show or movie in UHD and you’ll have to select ‘High’ in your streaming settings. You’ll also need an internet connection speed of at least 25 megabits per second to stream HDR content in Ultra High Definition, although Netflix says you can still enjoy HDR at lower resolutions like 1080p.

Netflix has a number of titles which offer HDR including the Marvel shows Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage as well as the upcoming Defenders, and other ‘Netflix’ shows like A Series of Unfortunate Events, Marco Polo and more. Netflix has marked HDR compatible shows with a HDR logo next to their description: HDR.png.

If you love great quality video and have an Xperia XZ Premium you should definitely check this out and really put that 4K res screen to full use.
