Without doubt one of the biggest success stories for Android in the tablet arena over the past 2 years has been the Nexus 7. With sales approaching 4.6 Million units shipped worldwide, since its release in June last year, the tablet has gained mainstream success where other manufacturers have seemingly failed.
Leading into Google I/O earlier this month, a refreshed Nexus 7 was rumoured to be released at the keynote address on Day 1, however this failed to materialise and many were disappointed when Google failed to announce any new hardware at the developers conference.
In a report by Digitimes, a source has advised that AU Optronics (AUO) has been commissioned by Google and Asus to produce a 7-inch low-temperature poly-silicon (LTPS) panel for the refreshed release of the Nexus 7. When questioned about the statement, AUO advised – in no surprise to anyone – that the company does not comment on any particular customers and orders.
The extended hope of many users is that the refreshed Nexus 7 will run Android 4.3 at release. With references to Android 4.3 appearing on benchmarks and server logs as well as at a tradeshow in Thailand, there’s little doubt that the updated OS is close to ready for user consumption. Given that Google has previously launched new hardware with new versions of Android, an updated Nexus 7 running Android 4.3 is a very real possibility.

No need to refresh Nexus7. Just make a bass nexus 8 with 3G and phone/voice calls and SMS features. sell it with a bluetooth set for calls like the Sony xperia 6.4″ phablet. And a Google watch accessory that connects to the nexus 8 phablet over low-power bluetooth4.
The Nexus 7 is a brick…I dread every day I brought this. Total hype over nothing….maybe they should call it the “Random Access Memories” version??

It will replace my Galaxy Tab 7.7 when it dies, mind you shock horror the 7.7 just got an official JB update from Samsung. Now that was a nice surprise.

I have a Nexus 7 and I absolutely love it. i really don’t understand some people saying it’s slow. Mine is so silky smooth and fast, I can’t believe it!. Unlike my RAZR HD which is all stuttery and laggy…
I know you will all say that it’s a budget tablet but I want an 8 inch high speced 64 gb nexus tablet I don’t care what it costs (within reason)
One of the reasons I love my N7 is that there’s no need to upgrade it. And it will still get the latest updates for some time yet.
yep my thoughts exactly. A rear camera would be nice but my phone has one of them. Otherwise, I’ll continue to use mine like the cheap, fast internet appliance that it is.
I own a 16GB Nexus 7 and love it, if a refreshed model comes out I will seriously consider upgrading depending on what’s new.
I second this. I was disappointed with the haul at I/O (from a consumer perspective anyway) but I’m really excited to see some of these new device/Android 4.3 rumours come to fruition.
Same! Except I think I’d probably upgrade to 32GB and 3G, both the only real features I’m lacking.
I never thought I’d want/need 3G, just tether it to my phone, but I’m finding that process more and more frustrating, esp as my SGS2 seems to get really bad service generally.
