After announcing the Beta Labs test of Pie for the Nokia 8 earlier this month, the wait is finally over with the official release now rolling out to handsets.
The update was announced, as usual, by head of product for HMD Global, Juho Sarvikas, on Twitter:
Enjoy the festivities with another fresh piece of 🥧 from us – this time on Nokia 8! Phased roll out of #Android 9 Pie for #Nokia8 starts today.

The Nokia 8 Pie update was delayed for a fair amount of time ahead of the Beta Labs inclusion, but it’s far from the only Nokia branded phone waiting for the update. HMD Global has still not delivered the update for several of their lower end devices including the Nokia 3, Nokia 5 and Nokia 6. The Nokia 6 update appears to be the next phone in line to be updated with a Beta update leaking over on XDA-Developers yesterday.
Priced at just $699, the Nokia 8 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of on-board storage behind a 5.5″ QHD resolution Plastic OLED display. It’s a heck of a phone for the price, and should also see an update to Android Q when it’s announced next year – we just hope it’s in a more timely manner.
It’s not all happy on the home front. Nokia 8 Sirocco owners, who paid a premium for their devices were promised the Pie update by the end of November. Since then, complete silence. Nothing from Nokia despite numerous requests on their official app and twitter. It’s really frustrating. As an iPad owner and former Windows Phone owner, I’m used to fast and regular OS and security updates, but with HMD/Nokia we’re not getting that same level of regularity though it’d still better than many other Android manufacturers. HMD was all over the place pushing out the update to Oreo and the monthly security updates earlier this year and late last year on my Nokia 6. By the middle of the year security updates became regular and prompt (except for November’s) but I’m still waiting for Pie despite the fact it was released months ago. I understand individual models… Read more »
This is a big reason to choose a Nokia phone. They just got updated to the latest OS.
It’s the opposite for Samsung users. Samsung will wait years, and possibly never update your phone’s OS.
I’ve been running the beta on mine for a few weeks & the phone definitely runs snappier & is generally improved.
I paid just under $500 for mine in an Australian retail store, nothing comes close for the money, it’s not flashy but runs great & has solid hardware with great battery life & a decent camera.
