Niantic has announced its running a beta of its be Wizards Unite game over in the land of the long white cloud.

The company has a bit of a history of testing its games in our region – Pokemon Go saw a public release here before the rest of the world.

A public beta doesn’t necessarily mean the app is close to release – we saw quite a delay between the beta tests and eventual release for Pokemon Go.

Android Police has details of the beta gameplay which, unsurprisingly, involves going places and finding things to fill in a registry, like a sticker book. There’s also in-app purchases ranging up to $100 in price.

We’ve also heard that the game will feature some AR effects around directional portals which seems to have escaped mention thus far, as has combat or competition between players (as seen in the Play store listing) – perhaps the NZ beta test is only limiting itself to some parts of the full gameplay experience.

If you’re in New Zealand, you can find the app on the Google Play store. Australian Harry Potter fans might want to spend their Easter long weekend over in New Zealand. Otherwise, you’ll need to sit tight and wait.

While you’re waiting for a chance to play the game, register at WizardsUnite.com or pre-register for the game on Google Play.
