For the last few years Huawei have released their latest processor at IFA in September, followed closely by their second flagship for the year — the Mate. This year looks to be no different according to leaks but it is the non-official leaks that tell us more.
We saw a leak yesterday from Huawei that was a video teasing the release of the Kirin 990 chipset. The video gives a few details away such as what appears to be the first chipset with the 5G chipset built/incorporated into the die of the chipset — recent rumours have suggested this.
This is a big advancement in 5G chipset technology because until now the 5G modem has been seperate from the CPU. Having the 5G modem incorporated into the chipset *should* fix a lot of the battery issues we have seen with the first generation 5G devices.
The Kirin 990 will be built using a 7nm process which should already provide an improved power efficiency and will include their new neural processing unit design.
Of course, what would an official teaser from a manufacturer be without a date for the announcement — they want as many eyeballs available as possible on their new product. The Huawei Kirin 990 will be unveiled at IFA 2019 in Berlin on the 6th of September. For those who missed it yesterday here is that teaser video from Huawei again:
The other leak over the weekend is decidedly less official and comes courtesy of the same place so many others do, Weibo. A user has posted pictures of the display and the circuitry attached. It shows the presence of an in-display fingerprint sensor which is no surprise of course as the Mate 20 Pro arrived with an in-display fingerprint sensor.
The notch on the front display can be seen which appears to have two sensors in it. The two sensors, more than in the previous iteration, are expected to allow for a more secure facial recognition from Huawei. Google are bringing their new facial recognition in the Pixel 4 so we expect other manufacturers to also step up their facial recognition game.
September 6 is not far away (obviously) so we will hear all about the new Kirin chipset very soon. In doing so will learn about some of the new features we will expect to see in what will most likely once again be a great premium flagship that will set the bar high for all other manufacturers to aspire to.
