Google Pixel 4a pricing leaks — no price increase here

The Google Pixel 4a is becoming a bit of a leaky boat in the past week or two, especially with the hands on video published yesterday. Now we have seen a leak from Evan Blass showing mockups of billboards displaying the phone, once again revealing specifics about the device.

The images provided by Evan are mockup (Photoshopped) images demonstrating how the phone will look and given Evan’s propensity for accurate leaks there is little reason to doubt them.

So what do the images show us — we can see the colourful power button of course, a Google staple by now, the punch hole display and on the rear the square camera bump housing a single lens and fingerprint sensor. The images show a black variant and a “Not Quite” blue colour variant.

The mockups also show the phone will be starting at US$399 which could either mean a Pixel 4a XL is also available or, given we have seen very little mention of an XL version, just that there will be different storage variations of the same phone — which would hardly be a surprise. The US$399 price sticks the price for the Pixel 4a smack bang around where it was last year — once again Google seem to have set themselves a price target and have built a phone with that in mind.

The pricing once again sticks the mid-year Pixel in the mid-range and will most likely have matching specs. The beauty of the mid-range Pixels is their software — the Pixel Experience. Last year it had the best mid-range smartphone camera by a fair way in our opinion which could mostly be accredited to the software.

There also seems to be the new Google Assistant on the mid-range Pixel which is not a surprise. Hopefully it works on phones with a G-Suite account present right out of the box. Time will tell.

We are expecting it to release whenever Google decides to have their online streamed Google I/O keynote — likely to be around the same time as the now-cancelled conference was meant to be — second week of May. Stay tuned if you want a fantastic camera without having to pay an arm and a leg for it.
