Early this morning Samsung held their Unpacked event and we saw the five devices we were expecting to see. One of them though, the Galaxy Z Fold 2, was only more of a teaser than a full reveal. Specs, pricing and availability were not revealed but we were told a lot of other details of the new foldable from Samsung.

The Galaxy Z Fold 2 will host its own launch event next month where all the exact details of it will be revealed (if the leakers haven’t already done so by then) but what we did find out looks impressive.

As you would expect the Galaxy Z Fold 2 is an iteration on last year’s Galaxy Fold with the design extremely similar. The first noticeable difference is the displays. Outside the display takes up most of the surface with much smaller bezels than last year — rumoured to be 6.2-inches.

Inside the display is now bezel-less with a hole punch Infinity-O display for the selfie camera. The inside display is rumoured to be a 7.7-inch display with support for 120Hz refresh rate. This year the display will not be covered in a thin polymer layer but instead will use Ultra Thin Glass to protect the foldable display.

The hinge on the Galaxy Z Fold 2 will have the same Flex Mode that arrived with the Galaxy Z Flip with the ability to have the phone open between 90 and 120 degrees and have it stay open. The hinge will also not full close the device with a small gap on the inside to allow for the bending of the Ultra Thin Glass.

Inside the Galaxy Z Fold 2 will arrive with the new Snapdragon 865+ chipset and 12GB of RAM. It will most likely support Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2 through the inclusion of Qualcomm’s FastConnect 6900.

The Galaxy Z Fold 2 will arrive in two different colour variants as expected — a Mystic Bronze and a Mystic Black. Samsung have also teased a special edition Thom Browne edition along with the ability to customise the colour of your hinge with either Ruby Red, Rich Gold, Platinum Silver, or Sapphire Blue for an accent.

The full list of specs were not revealed by Samsung overnight but are expected to include:

  • Front Screen: 6.2-inch (2,260 x 816 pixels)
  • Inner Screen: 7.7-inch AMOLED (2,208 x 1,768 pixels with 120Hz refresh rate)

  • Price: UNKNOWN
  • Availability: UNKNOWN

Samsung have said that they will provide the full info at a Galaxy Z Fold 2 event on September 1 where we expect to find out pricing and availability for Australians along with a full spec list. The Australian pre-order page is not live yet but if you want to check out the US pre-order page and interact with a 360 degree render head on over there.

We will of course be keeping our eye on our inboxes for more details from Samsung Australia and will bring them to you when we have them. The new Galaxy Z Fold 2 looks to be an improvement in every way over the first generation. Is it there yet? Would you consider the second generation?
