Well it’s no surprise when we say that Optus is officially killing off its second MVNO brand, Gomo Mobile but what is surprising is that instead of moving these customers to their main MVNO brand Amaysim, Gomo customers are being moved over to Catch Mobile brand.
We reported earlier this year that Gomo mobile had stopped taking new customers from 1st June 2023 with anyone who had a SIM card but had yet not activated it to do so by 10 July 2023 and it was clear that Optus would look at ending the brand given the number two telco had brought its biggest MVNO partner, Amaysim, in November 202 with the purchase settling in February 2021, around the same time it launched the Gomo brand.
On its website, Gomo issued the following statement:
Thanks for being with gomo over the years and part of the Optus family. As we continue to improve our products and look for new ways to provide even greater value, we’ve decided to say goodbye to gomo on 15 December 2023.
To make sure you stay connected with a great value plan powered by the Optus network, we have an exclusive first-month-free offer from our partner brand Catch Connect Mobile – only available to gomo customers. We’ve sent you a Catch Connect SIM with the offer and instructions on how to switch in the mail. If you haven’t received a SIM, contact us via the app or web chat and we’ll arrange for a SIM to be sent out.
Gomo have a set of frequently asked questions on its website about the ending of the brand and the deals that are offered via Catch Mobile, though it is interesting that if you have a Gomo eSIM, you are not able to get a catch mobile eSIM purely because Catch mobile does not support eSIM’s at this stage and it is unclear whether this will become an available feature in the future.
Should you wish to not switch over to Catch Mobile, it is important that you port out your number to another provider before 15 December 2023, otherwise your service will be disconnected and you may loose your mobile number.
It’s sad to see another MNVO brand leave or end its service in the market but I guess its not surprising given that Optus has already had the week from hell over the massive network outage which did affect not only Optus but MVNO brands that used the Optus 4G and 5G networks such as Gomo and Amaysim just to name a couple.
Well now it is definitely time to say goodbye to Gomo mobile in Australia.
