See that phone in the middle there? That’s last year’s Nexus handset, the Nexus 5, and recently it looked as if it had finally ceased production with the red and white colour options disappearing from the Play Store entirely, and the black units being marked out of stock.
We wrote to Google and asked about this, because while it’s a year old, the Nexus 5 is still a pretty decent handset, and it’s still in demand as well. Today, we heard back and can confirm, straight from the mouth of a Google spokesperson:
Nexus 5 will continue to be available for sale through select retailers and on Google Play through early next year.
While this is reassuring news, we don’t know exactly when the Nexus 5 will return to in-stock on the Play Store, or which other retailers will continue to receive stock. Given prior indications from September, it seems as if the Nexus 5 might continue to be sold, but production might actually have stopped.
If you spot a Nexus 5 for sale, in the wild or online, let us know!
Wouldn’t it be great if they were retiring the nexus 5 to replace it with an updated spec nexus 5?
Like with my crappy Galaxy Nexus, they’ll stop giving it Android updates before too long.
besides the crappy battery, still prefer it to the N6
