Social video streaming app Meerkat has beaten the official Twitter video streaming service to Android, with the app now available to download for all users.
If you’re not familiar with Meerkat, it’s a video streaming service which broadcasts your stream on Twitter. Hit the stream button within the app and it advertises your stream to your Twitter followers. If users have the Meerkat app installed, they then receive a push notification that you’re ‘Live’.
Unlike Twitter’s official video streaming app Periscope which launched a few weeks ago, but still isn’t available for Android, Meerkat streams aren’t available to view once the stream has ended.
Previously available to a closed beta group, Meerkat has hit wider distribution while still retaining the (Beta) tag on the Google Play entry.
If you’re a Meerkat noob, the team at Meerkat has some ‘Rules’:
- Everything that happens on Meerkat happens on Twitter.
- Streams will be pushed to followers in real time via push notifications.
- People can only watch it live. There are no reruns.
- You can save your streams to your phone, but Meerkat will never keep them.
- Watchers can retweet any stream to their followers in real time.
- Everyone can watch on web.
- Be kind.
