Sony has today announced that their super mid-range phone, the Xperia M4 Aqua is heading to Optus.
When it was announced at Mobile World Congress in February, the Sony Xperia M4 Aqua was somewhat overshadowed by the Xperia Z4 Tablet, but truth be told, after a hands-on at the Sony booth, I was blown away with just how good a handset the phone is. The phone is powered by a Snapdragon 615 processor with 2GB of RAM and was super-fluid and nice to use when navigating around the Android 5.0.2 interface.
The M4 Aqua, by its very name indicates the phone has at least water resistance, but with an IP65/68 rating, that’s pretty much waterproof – at least to a degree. The phone comes with a capless micro-USB port, a first for Sony even with their list of life-proof devices – though it still has easy to access caps over the SIM and micro-SD card slots.
The star of the Xperia M4 Aqua (outside of the waterproofing) is the 13MP Exmor RS camera sensor on the rear, with an f/2.0 aperture and options to select up to ISO 3200 in software to really drive up that light sensitivity. The camera has Sony’s Superior Auto Mode as well which should make taking a quick snap with the dedicated camera shutter button a breeze. Selfie addicts aren’t forgotten either with a 5MP front-facing camera with an 88° field of view allowing you to grab a group selfie if you want.
With the M4 Aqua, Sony is bringing a lot of features from the higher end Z-series to the mid-range, creating this ‘Super mid-range’ line. The plastic casing allows them to drop some of the more premium manufacturing options with durable plastic, but it has a similar design. John Featherstone, Sony Mobile Communications Head of Business Development for APAC and Market Head for Oceania says of the M4 Aqua:
Sony has a renewed focus on its mid-range tier of products and the Xperia M4 Aqua is the perfect representation of this new wave of competitively priced handsets, with no compromises. Offering many of the standout features made famous by our Xperia Z Series; superior imaging, up to two-day battery life and waterproofing– Xperia M4 Aqua brings a proposition and price that make this product a compelling offer in the mid-tier segment of the market.
Optus will be offering the Xperia M4 Aqua in black for $0 up front on the $40 My Plan Plus on a 24 months contract which includes unlimited talk & text to standard numbers within Australia. (Minimum total cost $960). The phone is available in-store from today, or online from tomorrow the 4th of August.
Looks like the version that Optus is selling is not the e2363 model that would include the B5 850MHz LTE frequency as well for anybody looking at buying outright for Vodafone. According to the optus specs:
3G Network 850/900/1900/2100 MHz
4G Network 700/1800/2100/2600/TD2300 MHz
Still good for Optus
Just as they announce the M5 to the world. Still no word on outright pricing for the M4 in Australia though, yatango have them at $369 I doubt Optus will sell under $400 but can always hope.
Is there an outright price Dan?
I did ask. No reply received yet.
Price is $336 outright. Good price.
