The big news of the week is the Stagefright security vulnerability which can auto-execute code with near root access by simply receiving an MMS message. There are a number of ways to prevent it – simply turning off auto-retrieve MMS in your text messaging app – but it seems HTC has addressed Stagefright at system level in their Android 5.1 update.
A check of the software update page, shows that Telstra is currently testing the Android 5.1 update for the HTC One M9, expecting the update to be scheduled for deployment on the 10th of August. The bigger news is that the update addresses the Stagefright security vunerability:
In terms of the Android 5.1 update for the M9 from other Australian carriers, Vodafone currently has the software update in testing, as does Optus, though Optus gives a mid-August eta for release.
The update will bring other goodies, but the update headline is the system level fix for Stagefright – it’s just a shame it needs to go through the carrier approval process before owners begin receiving the fix. We’ll keep an eye out on progress on this one and keep you updated.

Meanwhile my Galaxy S6 from a company who makes many times more money than HTC does doesn’t even have an ETA for when telco’s will get the damn 5.1.1 software for them to test….
