The fingerprint sensor has been an increasingly adopted hardware/software feature of Android OEMs over the last 12 months, and with Google implementing fingerprint support as a native feature in Android Marshmallow, it’s going to spread further, even into Motorola’s phones says SVP of Lenovo.
Chen Xudong, SVP of Lenovo and president for Lenovo China and Asia Pacific, has said in an interview that all the 2016 Moto lineup, from the low-end Moto E through the Moto G and Moto X and whatever other models are released will come with fingerprint sensors.
Despite basically pioneering the concept of a smartphone with a built-in fingerprint scanner with the Atrix 4G back in 2011, Motorola hasn’t been quick to jump back on this train last year, when such sensors have been featured in pretty much every high-end Android device.
The now familiar Motorola dimple on the rear of their Moto series phones was supposed to include a fingerprint sensor, but as ex-Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside said, ‘It was supposed to be fingerprint recognition, and Apple bought the best supplier. So the second best supplier was the only one available to everyone else in the industry, and they weren’t there yet’. But that has now changed within the industry, with LG, Huawei, Samsung and Sony all releasing phones with very usable fingerprint sensors.
Also in the interview, Xudong said that all phones in the range will come with a screen 5″ or above – remember when Dell released the 5″ Dell Streak and it was monstrously large? The combined Lenovo/Motorola brand using the Vibe and Moto branding will release 15 models of phone in their markets in 2016, though no announcements of where the Vibe handsets will move to this year.
As an addendum, Mr Xudong also said that Google Services will definitely be back in China by the end of the year – an announcement to be taken with a grain of salt until Google makes the announcement.
A new lineup of Moto phones, should be on the horizon with the almost year old Moto E 2015 very likely first up.

Having had the x play for the last few months – I would never buy a product from Motorola again – poor charging, reception isn’t great, tinny speakers, the thin freezes all the time – and Motorola customer service is abysmal.
