Samsung in India has announced a new phone, the Galaxy J2, overnight. It’s a mid-range handset that normally would get lost in the crowd, but it’s a new feature called Smart Glow that could appear on future handsets that’s caused a bit of a stir around Android circles.
The phone itself comes with a few decent features, a 5″ SuperAMOLED HD (1280×720) resolution display with a Spreadtrum SC8830 quad-core processor and 1.5GB of RAM. The phone comes with 8GB of storage but has a microSD card slot to expand that if needed. There phone comes with Cat. 4 LTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and BlueTooth 4.0 and runs Marshmallow. The phone comes with a 2,600 mAh battery. Camera wise you’ll find an 8MP camera on the rear and a 5MP sensor on the front.
But getting to the real news is Smart Glow. It’s an LED notification ring that sits around the camera which lights up in different colours in relation to various apps, contacts and phone alerts. Samsung in their press release for the launch of the phone says of Smart Glow :
While up to four alerts can be set, consumers can create and choose their own color for the Smart Glow. It also alerts a user if they are running low on battery, internal memory, or mobile data. Users can also use the Smart Glow LED ring to position the rear camera for higher mega-pixel selfies with the Selfie Assist feature.

The Galaxy J2 is apparently heading to the Indian market only, but we could see the feature on other phones – it may make it into more high end flagships we see coming up.
Why not make the smart glow happen around the front camera?
