Following the Hello Moto event here in Barcelona we got to spend some hands-on time with both the Moto G5 and G5 Plus. From our brief time with the devices, we’re quite impressed with what Moto has achieved at this price point.

Before we get into the hands on here’s a quick refresher on the specs of both models:

Both devices share a similar design with only minor variations, eg the headphone jack is on the top of the G5 and the bottom of the G5 Plus. Both devices feel light in the hand, however, despite their all metal construction the back of the doesn’t quite feel as solid as others.

The software is as close to stock as you could want it, with all of the major system elements appearing unchanged from Google’s design. Installed apps have also been kept to a minimum leaving more space for your apps or content.

Both devices feels responsive and well optimised, could it be that the Android OS and the lower tier chips have now converged to a point where you can get a consistently smooth experience? The real test of a device’s performance can’t be determined in a brief hands on, however, we’re quietly optimistic.

The one thing I was most curious about going into the event was how would the camera perform? Simple answer, great. Both models perform well with fast load time, quick capture times and seemingly fantastic auto focus. Both devices also support burst capture mode, something that is very appreciated.

We’re hoping to get out hands on a review unit and be able to bring you a full review.

I check out from really looking into devices between my own phone contract cycle and when I got my (current) Galaxy S5 I don’t think many/any moto devices were available on plans here, have the predecessors to this been sold on the main providers ?

Hey Duncan, seems this video is unlisted on YouTube as it’s only available via this link. The G5+ seems like a real bargain. Chances are someone in my family will be getting one as a gift in the near future.
