Sony has announced a new mid-range Xperia phone overnight, with a ‘Plus’ version of their Xperia XA2 offering a new design and high resolution audio.

The new phones eschew the older style design of the Xperia XA2, offering the first FullHD+ (1080 x 2160) resolution, 18:9 aspect ratio display in their mid-range, a step up from the 16:9 of the original XA2. The screen also gets a boost in size, jumping from 5.2″ up to 6.0″ in size. Under the hood, things get a little different, though the Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 processor is still powering the XA2 Plus. The phone now has options for 4/6GB RAM and 32/64GB of on-board storage.

As a first in the mid-range, the Xperia XA2 Plus is also getting Sony’s High-Resolution Audio option which includes their ‘unique DSEE HX audio upscaling technology’. Sony also says they’ve improved Bluetooth streaming with their LDAC, enabling Bluetooth to handle near high-resolution audio.

On the camera front, Sony has included a 23MP 1/2.3” Exmor RS sensor on the rear with an 84° wide-angle F2.0 lens that supports ‘Hybrid Autofocus’. On the front of the phone, a 8MP 1/4” Exmor R sensor with 120° super wide-angle f/2.4 lens is on hand to handle all your selfies with effects that include a number of portrait selfie effects such as: Bokeh, Soft skin, Skin brightness, Eye enlargement and Slender face.

The phone will be available in four colours: Silver, Black, Gold and Green in both Single SIM and Dual SIM configurations depending on whether it’s available through carriers or retailers. Sony Australia hasn’t announced anything with regards to the phone, but we’ve asked them to clarify if it will be available here.

This is the design the XZ2 should have had…. a modernisation of what I consider their really solid “omni-balance” design…
