Brazil will be the focus of the world in mid-June, when the 20th FIFA World Cup kicks off in São Paulo when Brazil plays Croatia. If you’re lucky enough to be there in person to see it, you’ll want to phone, text, tweet or tell someone who isn’t there about it. Luckily, Vodafone has today announced they’ve added Brazil to their list of countries covered under the Roam for $5 plan.

The addition of Brazil, brings the total list of countries supported to 47. The premise of the Roam for $5 is simple, pay $5 per day and use your phone just like you would if you were here at home. It’s a lot easier and simpler than trying to grab a local SIM card and then communicate your temporary number back to people who want to contact you.

Australia was one of the top 5 countries who in the world who applied for some of the 2.6 million 2014 FIFA World Cup tickets on offer, so there will definitely be some Aussies there.

Vodafone recognises the need to cover the World Cup for their customers with Chief Marketing Officer Kim Clarke saying

More than 80,000 Aussies applied for tickets in the first round alone so we are confident the demand for fair roaming rates for Brazil is there. We want our customers travelling to Brazil to be able to focus on the football, not worry about coming home to a massive phone bill.

So, if you’re heading to the World Cup (I am totally jealous) and you’re a Vodafone customer, you can simply add the $5 per day roaming to your plan as of the 23rd of April. $5 per day International roaming is now available on all their postpaid plans after customers demanded it, and Vodafone are definitely responsive to customers. Head over to the Vodafone website for more information.

Has anyone had any experience using these plans yet? Ive been told that you can only do it for 20 days maximum while over seas and that you have to select which days to activate it before you go.

I was under the impression when talking to vodafone staff a while back that it automatically just charges you $5 for the 24 hour period when you use it. I cant find anything about the 20 days either on their site.

Might go have a chat with them instore again.

Nope, no packs or passes to activate. The moment you make a call, use data or send a text overseas it’s charged at $5 and that’s it for the next 24 hours. I think the limit is 45 days in a year, but that’s a clause built in for arbitrage protection and only exercised in extreme cases, not normal usage.
