Moto X
A video from Toronto, Canada based Rogers Wireless has appeared on Google+ user Дима Прокопенко page and shows off the long awaited Motorola Moto X. The video also shows off the always on voice commands and other features of the phone. The video advises that the Moto X will be a Rogers exclusive – in Canada at least – where it will launch in August in a choice of black and white – unfortunately, no sign of the customisable back plates said to be launching in the US.

The Moto X is apparently always listening for commands, the initiating command appears to be ‘Ok Google Now…..’ without having to load Google Now or select voice operation, after hearing this command the phone instantly responds with the information you require or performs the function you want, like providing directions or setting reminders or other Google Now functions.

The Moto X will also include a discreet notification system called ‘Active Updates’. Instead of a multi-coloured notification LED the Moto X will display notifications on the screen which you can ignore or take care of straight away.

Also included are camera improvements which include a burst mode function to take multiple shots by simply holding your finger down on the screen, and an ability to launch the camera quickly by twisting your wrist twice, no need to slide anything or select an icon.

The video ends with the announcement of when the phone is coming and the colours, as well as pointing customers towards a rogers website that isn’t quite active just yet – rogers.com/motox.

Carriers are obviously already testing and preparing for launch of the Moto X in the US and Canada at least. Whether we see a release of the phone here in Australia remains to be seen. Unfortunately LTE bands in the US and Canada aren’t very compatible with our 1800MHz network here in Australia so importing may be a bit hard, but if the Moto X is released in Europe, where 1800MHz LTE is available we should at least be able to get hold of one to take for a spin.

Edit :
This always on voice commands reminded us of this 30 Rock Clip, what do you think? :

Can’t buy in Australia

Sean Royce

No one knows any solids facts about this phone yet except what it looks like and that it’ll be on rogers in Canada

Jeremy Cockle

This doesn’t appear to be the same phone that Eric Schmidt was seen with the other day that was said to be the x phone, the back appears to be completely different and it seems larger. What is the other one? Nexus 5, maybe?

Sean Royce

Dude, they are the same phone.

kungfutigerr

All I saw in the ad was a lady using Google Now on a Nexus 4.

Liam

Can I just say, it’s pretty cool that the The Verge and TechnoBuffalo both used this article as a source for their own articles! Shows how Ausdroid has a presence!

Sean Royce

I really hope this is a killer device. This is probably the most hyped phone I have ever seen. And it’s not even been released yet.

FabbJabb

Now why didnt I ever think of that? WOw, very cool indeed.

Uggh hurry up so I can properly see if this is my Nexus line replacement! :/

I am still not sure of it always listening in awaiting for your commands. I have read that for it to listen you do have to say ‘Ok google now……..” before it will search for what you want. Though this could be a failure as it always listening in would be a bad thing if you happen to have your phone in your pockets in a meeting :S

Jason Murray

Maybe it’s always listening IF it’s on a flat surface and not moving.

If not, every IT department ever will ban it.

Alex Murphy

Why? If someone wanted to record a meeting, they would just use a recorder app…

vijay alapati

Always on voice commands? That’s something I always wanted, but might be a battery drainer 🙁

Luke Monahan

Plus it must also have “always on” gyroscope/accelerometer to pick up the camera gesture.

The rumour has been that it has a dedicated low-power co-processor to handle this kind of thing without battery drain.

Even if this isn’t true, I’m pretty sure they’re not silly enough to have have it always on if it doesn’t have significantly better battery performance than current phones.

vijay alapati

Wish its true

Joshua

My guess is that colours/textures will only be able to be chosen via the play store.

Sean Royce

Why would it be from the play store? It’s not a Nexus device. It’s a Motorola device. They’re still separate companies, it’s just owned by Google.

vijay alapati

Well the US play store sells Samsung and HTC one nexus editions, so this might be happening

Alex Murphy

They’ll probably advertise it on the play store and redirect you to the Motorola website. I think this is just the beginning of a line of new Moto products, so doing it through their own site makes more sense. Plus Google already sells Nexus, Google Play Experience, and Chrome devices. Don’t want to confuse people with even more choices on one site lol. The X deserves its own site.

Idon't Know

it is pretty amusing that you still think Google and Motorola are separate companies since Google has replaced most of the Motorola management with Google employees as well as other personnel. Naive in the extreme to believe they are separate.

Sean Royce

They are separate companies. Pepsi owned Pizza Hut but they were still separate companies.
