Aldi are set to introduce yet another Android tablet this Saturday, with the new Medion LifeTab 7.85″ Android tablet to go on sale for $199.

The Medion LifeTab 7.85″ tablet is offering some decent specs for a tablet given the market it is aiming for. The list of specs are:

  • 7.85″ IPS HD Display (1024 x 768)
  • 1.6GHz ARM Cortex A9 quad-core processor
  • 1 GB DDR3 RAM
  • 16 GB internal memory, expandable via microSD memory card
  • 5MP rear camera, 2MP front facing
  • WiFi 802.11 b/g/n
  • Android 4.4
  • 200x137x9mm @ 370grams

The main selling point is this, is the inclusion of Android 4.4, on a budget model tablet, which is a very much welcome upgrade upgrade from the usual Jelly Bean or even worse Ice Cream Sandwich base OS install we normally see.

The tablet comes backed with the usual 12 month warranty, Aldi also includes a 60-Day money back guarantee to refund or replace it if you’re not happy with it. The sale starts this Saturday the 26th April, check your local store for opening times.

I went to buy one today (6th May) as the local store had about 8 in the cabinet. When she scanned it, it came up as “Locked” so she spoke to the manager. They don’t know why it’s locked and suggested it might be getting recalled, but the end result is that they can’t sell me one.

I confirmed it was recalled the same Wednesday as it went on sale. Reason for recall is unknown.

Any recommendations for cases/covers/folios appropriate for this unit?
Is it likely to be cross-compatible (in terms of size, camera location and port location) with any other major brand/model?

It seems quite unlikely, but Aldi do usually sell an accessory kit with their tablets for a lobster or so, usually includes a case a few other widgets.

Ermagerd Ausdroid is getting paid by Aldi for this

One interesting icon in the ad is the one for Kaspersky.
Does this mean this tablet will ship with a security app as part of the preinstalled apps collection?

I do believe its a trial which you may have to pay for, but certainly will be interesting to see.
