In the lead up to the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S5, the rumour mill strongly hinted at a phone sporting a quadHD (2560×1440) display. When Samsung finally unveiled the Galaxy S5 at Mobile World Congress, the screen was listed as fullHD 1920×1080 Super AMOLED but the dream of a QHD screen may not be over according to SamMobile.
Quoting a report from AsiaToday, the report says Samsung expects to release a phone that is currently known as ‘Project KQ’ which will be publicly launched as the Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime, around June. The phone which could be one of the first Samsung Android phones to come with a metallic body, would include an Octa-Core Exynos 5430 processor running the BIG.little ARM architecture which would have four Cortex-A15 cores clocked at 2.1GHz paired with lower power Cortex-A7 cores clocked at 1.5GHz. The Exynos based processor would be integrated Intel LTE modem and come with a Mali T6XXX GPU clocked at 600MHz.
Further information from 9to5Google suggests the Galaxy S5 Prime would carry the SM-G906S model #. The model # is currently visible on the Samsung ‘Find my mobile’ page and has previously been seen on graphics benchmarking site GFXBench :
With the LG G3 rumoured to be launching around June with a QHD display, the possibility that Samsung is launching a higher end version to compete is not outside the realms of possibilities. Remember, Samsung famously updated their Galaxy Tab 10.1 in record time to make it thinner and more powerful after Apple announced the iPad 2.
With HTC sporting one of the most premium looking and feeling phones currently on the market in the M8, and LG rumoured to be launching a QHD screened behemoth in June, the possibility of Samsung releasing a phone that would address both specs is possible, it just remains to be seen if it’s likely. June could be a very interesting month in mobiles.
What does a QHD screen give you apart from reduced performance at increased costs? My daily is a 6.44″ screen at full HD. I want faster graphics but even at this size or even my 10″ full HD tablet I seriously doubt that I am going to see a difference other than reduced performance…???
And you’re justified in doubting. The angular distance is too small to pick apart individual pixels on a 5″ 1080P screen at regular focal distance; QHD is just a waste of memory and power.
Well its uncertain what type of panel it is. It could be pentile amoled or even an lcd. If the panel is an improvement in other areas as well than it should sway people towards it.
