Sharp is preparing its manufacturing lines for mass production of the industry’s highest resolution displays.
The new displays  would see Sharp overtake rival Japan Display and take the number one position thanks to cutting edge 600 pixel density per inch panels.
Initially, Sharp will produce 5.5 inch LCD panels for smartphones and later move onto 7 to 9 inch tablets. Production is not due to commence until the earliest March 2015, so you’ll need to be very patient if you want to get your hands on one.
Sharp is also touting that the displays will enable 4K content on small screens however its unclear which displays will feature the high pixel density and 4K resolution. Calculations put the display size at around 7.3 inches, for a resolution of 3840 x 2160 and a PPI of 600. Therefore the first batch of 5.5 inch smartphones certainly won’t be 4K capable.
Whether we see these devices reach Australian shores is yet to be seen…

Technology never ceases to amaze me. I can’t wait. I’d prefer if they put them in laptops first though. They are lacking behind so many smart phones. It’s ridiculous.
Jamie, what screenres would a 600PPI 5.5 inch screen have?
It would be about 3K resolution (working it out from the calculations in the article), so an estimated:
2880 x 1620 would be the res on a 5.5 screen.
