Optus have added another low-end phone to their pre-paid line, adding the Samsung Galaxy Young 2 for $99.

The Galaxy Young 2, being an entry level device, isn’t going to be winning any awards in the design or specs categories. But it is a Samsung phone, which means it’s generally reliable and unlike some other manufacturers phones, could conceivably see an update to its operating system at some point in its life. It’s not a bad looking phone, mainly in keeping with Samsungs design sensibilities, although it’s no Galaxy Alpha in terms of looks, it’s definitely functional.

The list of specs for the Galaxy Young 2 include:

  • 3.5″ TFT Display (320 x 480)
  • 1 GHz Single Core Cortex-A7
  • 512 MB RAM
  • 4GB Memory, expandable to 32GB via microSD
  • 3.15 MP rear camera only
  • Bluetooth v4.0, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, Wi-Fi Direct, Wi-Fi hotspot
  • Network:
    • 2G: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
    • 3G: 900/2100 MHz
  • 1300mAh removable battery

Given that Vodafone and Huawei, this week announced the Ascend Y550 for the same $99 price but with 4G capabilities, this could be a hard sell at the same price point. That said, if you’re after a relative cheap device that won’t break the bank or after a basic smartphone to start out with, then you may want to have a look at the Samsung Galaxy Young 2 either at your local Optus store or online for $99.
