Earlier this year, LG released a series of phones on their home turf, which can only be described as phones with personality. The phones are fun and have received good feedback from customers in Korea, and now they’re set to debut overseas.

The phones come in four colours, and LG has actually named the four phones and given each a back story. The phones characters have expressive eyes which can be customised, in the UX as well as in with markers or stickers, and each characters personality shines through in wallpapers, widgets and ringtones on the phone:

AKA is available in four different personas, from Eggy in yellow who falls frequently in love, the ever-so-impulsive Wooky in white, the soft-hearted and music-loving Soul in navy and Yo-Yo in pink who is always on a diet.

There’s also an ‘art toy figurine’ included with each phone that will help you to personalise the phone, allowing you to use the camera to shoot a 3D image of the toy.

Hardware wise, the phone is a pretty mid-range device including :

  • 5.0-inch HD IPS
  • 1.2GHz Quad-Core Processor
  • 1.5GB RAM
  • 16GB with microSD card slot
  • 8.0MP Rear Camera with Laser Auto Focus and Front 2.1MP
  • Wi-Fi / Bluetooth 4.0 / NFC / A-GPS / USB 2.0
  • 4G LTE
  • Android 4.4 KitKat
  • 138.7 x 71.9 x 9.9mm @135.5g (without font slide cover) or 157g (with front slide cover)
  • 2,610mAh (removable)
  • White/Yellow/Navy/Pink
  • Art Toy / Stickers

The LG AKA phones come with Android 4.4 and a host of software features such as the Touch & Shoot and Gesture Shot features to be used in conjunction with the rear camera which features Laser Auto-Focus like the premium LG G3 handset.

LG will be bringing the LG AKA to Hong Kong next week but will roll it out to China, Taiwan, Singapore and Turkey later, with more markets to be announced down the track.

Depending on price, this looks like a serious mid range phone, dressed up as a fun phone. The specs are very decent for a mid ranger, it’s got a very large removeable battery (and a spare in the box), LTE, 16GB storage expandable by a microSD card slot (up to 128GB), speaker(s?) on the bottom – not back facing, volume and power keys on the back ala the G Series, Snapdragon 400 SoC. Its also got the LG Knock Code for unlocking the phone. There’s a notification light, and when you slide the front cover down halfway – your notifications… Read more ยป

Ahh, sometimes I wish I was a teenage Korean girl.

The backstories will have to be retweaked for Western audiences. Can’t have a phone promoting anorexia.

The female AKA character looks overweight, in toy form and on screen.

Reviews of the phones are on Engadget, PhoneArena and C|net
Engadget has the pic of the toys which come with the phones.
Phone Arena has a very good set of photos of the phones, including pics of the clothes styled front covers for the phones, which got no mention elseweb.
C|net has a reasonably solid preview writeup on the phones.

Which female character looks overweight?

There is only one female character in the AKA lineup. YoYo.
In the pic on Engadget, her phone and toy are the leftmost.
