The recent security furore caused by the Stagefright security vulnerability has seen manufacturers finally take a look at how updates are being delivered to their handsets. Samsung came out and announced they were attempting to open channels with carriers for monthly security updates, followed by Google and now LG has confirmed they too will be moving to push security updates out monthly.
Google themselves in their blog post announcing monthly security updates for Nexus devices, advised they were sending advices out to Android manufacturers monthly based on tips from security advisers through their Android bug bounty program. Manufacturers like LG are now going to be taking these more seriously and LG has advised Wired that:
LG will be providing security updates on a monthly basis which carriers will then be able to make available to customers immediately. We believe these important steps will demonstrate to LG customers that security is our highest priority.
At the Blackhat conference where the Stagefright bug was publicly expanded on, Google took the opportunity to announce that a number of handsets, including the LG G2, G3 and G4 – as well as hundreds more handsets – would be patched.
Google has already begun rolling out fixes, starting with supplying factory images for Nexus devices, with Over The Air (OTA) updates apparently being pushed out as well – though it appears it’s a slow, staggered rollout, as is normally the case to ensure no issues are occuring.
