OPPO are making a name for themselves in the low-mid range segment of the smartphone market. Their hardware is top notch at extremely competitive prices. In a step up into the mid-upper end of the market OPPO released the R9s Plus late last year and today have launched it into Australia.
The OPPO R9s Plus aims to provide consumers with a higher end experience with “advanced camera technologies” and a large 6″ AMOLED display. OPPO Australia Executive Director, Michael Tran, said at the launch that the R9s Plus will be a hit with Australian consumers who want a high performance device while getting great value for money. Let’s be honest, who doesn’t want this? After launching the R9s in Australia in January OPPO have decided to build upon that success and introduce the larger R9s Plus.
The R9s Plus has a 6in 1080P display and its dimensions are 163.6 x 80.8 x 7.4 mm with a 75% screen-to-body ratio. You could imagine in a phone that big it could pack a decent sized battery, and it does with a 4000mAh battery. It is powered by a Qualcomm MSM8976 Pro Snapdragon 653 with a whopping 6GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. There is the option to expand this storage with a microSD card up to 256GB. The microSD card slot can also be used as a second SIM tray.
The camera is where OPPO feel this phone sets itself apart from the pack. The rear camera has advanced OIS with a “40% larger anti-shake area to reduce jitter”. It is a 16MP f/1.7 rear camera with phase detection autofocus and an LED flash. Tjhe front facing camera is also 16MP with f/2.0 and uses OPPO’s Screen Flash technology for high quality low-light selfies.
Unfortunately the OPPO R9s Plus will be launching with OPPO’s software skin, ColorOS, atop of Android 6.0.1 MArshmallow. We have reached out to OPPO regarding the prospect of this phone ever seeing Nougat.
The R9s Plus is on sale nationwide from today in both black and gold for $698 RRP, available instore at JB Hi-Fi, Officeworks and Woolworths. We have one on the way to us as I type this so stay tuned for our review in the next week or so.

Errr, lesser spec? SD821 and a screen that has a way better PPI and a UI that isn’t poo. As well as the latest OS.
I think you are perhaps referring to the HTC “U Ultra” – the “U Play” has MediaTekâ„¢ Helioâ„¢ P10, Octa-core, 64-bit, 3GB Ram, 32GB Storage and is running Android 6.0 and the PPI is negligible with its HD Screen.

no worries. I think HTC are taking the P*SS with those spec’s for $799.00 – still most people buying on contract will have no idea..
Not to mention Oppo’s UI is absolutely rubbish…they add enormous amounts of iOSisation to the UI, and for some inexplicable reason it kills apps like there’s no tomorrow, really messing up notifications…
They are for not so tech savvy users for which the outlook of the phone plays a major part in their decision making. And this is the reason why they succeeded without worrying about the short supply of top notch chips like the 835.
Surely Oppo are joking with that price for 1080P and SD653?
The Axon 7 is $699 RRP (much cheaper if you can settle for grey imports) and it has a 2K screen and Snapdragon 820…
Yeah I was a little surprised at the price for a low-mid range phone. But on re-reading I see this is mid-upper range phone.
They’ve priced it too close to 2016 flagships with proper top-end specs…S7s are going for not much more now, and there’s the ZTE Axon 7 which for the same price (AU$699 at JB HiFi for AU stock so the comparison is fair to the Oppo) has much better specs…
I have a Lenovo P2 using a Snapdragon 625 processor and it runs great. I haven’t noticed any difference in performance coming from a Moto Z…Specs and numbers don’t tell the whole story
Can I ask…how did you go about sourcing a P2 in Australia?
