On Wednesday 2am Melbourne time (because no one else really matters right?) the latest phone from fledgling startup OnePlus will be announced. At this stage very little is actually “known”. Today we have seen a couple of leaks that have further confused the situation.
This morning we saw a leak that “confirmed” the OnePlus 5 to have a 3,300mAh battery, smaller than the 4,000mAh first expected. The leak came in the form of a Weibo post (so many leaks come from Weibo it seems) by Kumamoto technology showing a purported picture of some promotional information and the battery specifications. It showed this smaller battery size as well as the presence of their proprietary charging solution, Dash Charge technology.
This battery size is a bit disappointing but considering the Pixel XL only has 3,450mAh battery and it’s battery life is astounding (for most). The OnePlus 5’s doppelganger, the OPPO R11, only has a battery size of 3,000mAh so this 3,300mAh is certainly possible.
This afternoon there was another leak via what appears to be an Indian tech site. We think this one could be legitimate, given that the phone does go on sale there via Amazon in the next few days. This leak shows the specs of the OnePlus 5 and from these it seems to be a beast. The battery is apparently 4,000mAh and there are two variants, one with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of onboard storage and the other with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of onboard storage.
The pricing is 37,999Rs (AU$777) for the larger variant and 32,999Rs (AU$674).
Confused right? One thing for sure OnePlus are doing a fairly good job at hyping this phone without the over the top hype-train of previous years. The phone may look very familiar, but according to their Carl Pei, it will feel and look totally different once it is in our hands. I look forward to that — the specs make this phone very interesting, throw on a factory-made official custom ROM (OxygenOS) and you could have a great user experience.
We do know that OnePlus watch Ausdroid so sound off in the comments below how much you want them to sell this direct to Australians.
I have been holding off buying a new phone for 8 weeks waiting for this and want to know where to buy it here in Oz? What’s the IP rating? What are the speakers/audio like? Looking forward to the answers soon, but like Brian below, maybe if I’m not impressed I’ll wait to see what the Nokia 9 is like.

I have put off buying a new phone for the last 6 weeks waiting for this phone. My zenfone 2 ghost touches has meant I have had to go back to the Nexus 4. I am waiting to see what this one has for me before deciding which one to get, otherwise I might be waiting for the next Nokia.
