Oppo has today announced a new smartphone for the Australian market, with the A77 heading to stores on Monday the 10th of July.

The handset is being launched at retail with Officeworks and JB Hi-Fi stocking the handset, as well as new partner The Good Guys who will begin stocking the phone from the 17th of July. Priced at just $448, the A77 isn’t going to break the bank, but it will tick a surprising amount of hardware boxes.

An octa-core Mediatek MT6750T SoC powers the handset, with 4GB of RAM helping to smooth out any bumps. You get 64GB of on-board storage as well as a microSD card slot with support for cards up to 128GB.

Oppo has again focused on the selfie aspect for the A77, with a 16MP front-facing 1/3 inch sensor that includes an f/2.0 aperture while the rear camera gets a 13MP shooter with f/2.2 aperture. The camera also gets software features with Beautify 4.0 to smooth out blemishes, and bokeh effect for a bit of added depth.

Camera is definitely a focus for Oppo with Oppo Australia Executive Director, Michael Tran, saying

We know a picture is worth a thousand words, so we want to give our customers the best technology to tell their story. What we’ve managed to pack inside this phone, at the price point it will retail at, is pretty exceptional.

Sounds good. But my concern has always been Oppo’s speed of delivering updates. I have read too many Ausdroid users lamenting the slow updates or none at all.
