Google is getting serious about promoting the security available on Android, particularly those running Google Play. After announcing it at Google I/O Play Protect is now live, and Google wants to show it by branding phones using it in future.
The announcement comes via the Google India blog, with the list of companies and OEMs producing devices protected by Google Play Protect numbering over 100. New devices certified by Google will carry the ‘Google Play Protect logo’ on the box which Google says ensures that Google apps that are pre-installed on devices are authentic, and that apps from the Play Store can work as intended.
In markets such as India, there are devices sold without Google Apps, or Google Play installed – Android is of course available for any OEM to build. In recent times however, the benefits of Google protection is quite attractive, so this will make it easier for customers in these markets to ensure quality.
Google has begun rolling out Google Play Protect to existing devices already, you can check to see if your phone is protected by checking in the Settings in Google Play under ‘Device Certification’.
We may see this Play Protect certified branding on the upcoming Google Pixel phones, but likely we’ll see it even sooner on new handsets from India.
