At IFA 2017 LG signalled their intention to bring Google Assistant to more devices. Today they have announced that 87 of their Wi-Fi connect smart home appliances are now compatible with Google Assistant on Google Home, eligible Android and iOS smartphones.
Rolling out now via updates users can now control their connected LG smart home appliances using voice commands delivered to their Google Assistant. Examples of such commands are the ability to check the time remaining on the washing machine cycle, tell the fridge to make more ice, and adjust thermostat on the air conditioner.
The control is setup through LG’s SmartThinQ app allowing the user to control their appliances from afar (eg. warm up the oven on the way home while in the car). The app also learns a consumer’s usage patterns and helps to predict what they will require; obviously the more you use it the better its predictions become.
LG have been partners of Google from a while now, with the LG G6 being the first non-Google phone to officially receive Google Assistant (and the upcoming Pixel XL is LG-made). Their commitment to the connected world is highlighted by the statement from Song Dae-hyun, president of LG’s Home Appliance & Air Solution Company:
LG makes it especially easy for consumers to connect and interact with Wi-Fi built into virtually all of its 2017 appliances. Our collaboration with Google is an example of our strategy of Open Partnership, Open Platform, and Open Connectivity.
While I do not have any LG connected smart appliances in my house, this new integration with Google Assistant will make me look closer at them next time I purchase an appliance. How about you?
