Hot on the heels of Google releasing a second beta for the Pixel phones, OnePlus have officially unveiled a beta Android 8.0 firmware for the OnePlus 5. Even though there was an early version leaked a week or two ago this one is one that everyone can access and promises to be more stable than the leaked version.

The OnePlus 5 has seen great success throughout the world, even in Australia where their soft launch was by all accounts more successful than expected. For this reason this is welcome news to many Aussies who either imported a OnePlus 5 themselves or took part in the soft launch earlier this year — a chance to run the latest version of Android on their phone.

The beta release of Android 8.0 for the OnePlus 5 is part of the Open Beta Program and thus anyone who wants to can join in and update to the latest version of Android. The new firmware brings many of the features including:

  • Picture in Picture
  • Auto-fill
  • Smart text selection
  • New Quick Settings design
  • Parallel Apps
  • Updated security patch to October
  • Added notification dots to the Launcher
  • The ability to directly upload photos to Shot on OnePlus

To get in on the fun head over to the Open Beta website and follow the flashing instructions and you can grab the ROM from the this link here.

Keep in mind that this is beta software and bugs may well still be present and that once you flash it you will no longer receive the official stable OTAs but instead the Open Beta OTAs. A full wipe is required to restore back to to official stable builds so if that worries you it may be best to avoid the beta channel for now.

For those of you running OnePlus 5 phones are you on Android 8.0? How do you find it? If not, will you be flashing this? The Ausdroid OnePlus 5 will be running it before the day is out.

Tried installing this via TWRP and get an error that the device doesn’t match. Going to try flash stock recovery and see if that helps.
