Sony have struggled to make an impact in recent years possibly due to their extremely stale and blocky signature design. 2017 was the year of the disappearing bezel and Sony are possibly looking to finally change their massive bezel design according to a leak overnight.

Techi Estate have managed to get their hands on what looks to be the next Sony flagship, the Xperia XZ2. The phone which definitely has the Sony design language where the corners are square and not rounded at all shows bezels that are absolutely minute — a huge change from Sony’s of this and previous years.

The hardware inside the Xperia XZ2 is also rumoured to be top notch with it powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 and has 4GB of RAM and 64GB of onboard storage. There is a microSD slot for added storage. The display is apparently a 5.48 inch FHD (1920 x 1080) LCD — all this in a body that is just 128 x 73.4 x 7.4 mm in size and weighs 156 grams.

The cameras onboard are hopefully top noch considering so many other manufacturers use Sony parts for their cameras. The rear camera is a dual camera setup with both lenses 12MP while the front-facing selfie camera is 15MP. There is also IP65/68 water resistance for those you like that.

Sony have always put decent hardware into their phones only to be let down by their design team — hopefully 2018 changes all that for them.

Would you consider this as your next flagship purchase?

    Design looks fake.

So, almost no bezel means when I put the phone in a decent protective case, I won’t be able to drag icons to the edge of the screen, or drag down the notification screen when its in landscape mode.

Where’s the infra-red remote feature? Wireless charging? USB type C? Going backwards from existing competition phone’s features if it doesn’t have these. A battery that lasts three days with heavy use would outshine other phones – size be dammed.

I’m not totally convinced by the trend to go bezel-less. Sure, it looks hi-tech and futuristic, but that doesn’t help at all when you still need a way to properly hold the phone. Also, until we get better battery technology, I’ll stick to the 10mm thick phones. In fact, my XZ1 Compact is only 9.3mm thick and it’s a joy to hold and use.

I used to be a big Sony fan about 4 years ago and always freaked people out with my massive Z Ultra 6.4′ but then the company stopped being innovative and I switched to the Samsung Note series. The thickness of their phones and large bezels didn’t quite stand up to the competition, but if this device really is true, I might consider them again 🙂
