With Google’s Android Oreo update now having been in the wild for almost 5 months now, Android’s biggest hardware maker, Samsung hasn’t exactly been forthcoming about which of their devices will be receiving an update. Now, the team over at XDA-Developers has pulled together a list of devices which could be in line, based on data garnered from the Beta Oreo update for the Galaxy S8/S8+.

To date, the only Samsung device receiving the update is the Galaxy S8/S8+ which has seen a beta release which may be heading to gold shortly. That Beta update contained a list of XML files which hint at a fairly extensive list of handsets and tablets that may be getting a tasty treat in the future. The XML files contain the internal code-names for devices, and while it’s not guarantee, it’s a fairly well educated guess.

The list includes:

Samsung Galaxy Smartphones that may get Android Oreo
  • Samsung Galaxy A3 2017 (a3y17)
  • Samsung Galaxy A5 2017 (a5y17)
  • Samsung Galaxy A7 2017 (a7y17)
  • Samsung Galaxy A8 2016 SM-A810 (a8xe)
  • Samsung Galaxy A8 2018 (a8lte)
  • Samsung Galaxy A8+ 2018 (a8plte)
  • Samsung Galaxy J3 2017 (j3y17)
  • Samsung Galaxy J5 2017 (j5y17)
  • Samsung Galaxy J7 2017 (j7y17)
  • Samsung Galaxy J7+ (jadelte)
  • Samsung Galaxy J7 Duos 2017 (j7duo)
  • Samsung Galaxy J7 Max (j7max)
  • Samsung Galaxy J7 Neo (j7velte)
  • Samsung Galaxy J7 Prime (j7popelte)
  • Samsung Galaxy Note FE (gracer)
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 8 (great)
  • Samsung Galaxy S7 (hero)
  • Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge (hero2)
  • Samsung Galaxy S8 Active (cruiserlte)
  • Samsung Galaxy S8 (dream)
  • Samsung Galaxy S8+ (dream2)
Samsung Galaxy Tablets that may get Android Oreo
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8.0 SM-T355 (gt58lte)
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8.0 SM-T380/T385 2017 (gta2s)
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab A 10.1 SM-T580 (gtaxl)
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab Active 2 (gtactive2)
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab E 8.0 (gtesvelte)
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 SM-T825 (gts3)

At this stage, neither Optus, Telstra or Vodafone list an Oreo update even for the Galaxy S8/S8+ is even in testing, but that’s not to say it hasn’t been received. Samsung is still keeping the Oreo update for the phones in Beta at this time, but once it gets gold status then the Australian carriers will likely receive the software to begin their testing. Once that’s done, it’s like we’ll see more handsets with the update start appearing.

    Hi Dan,
Just looking at the Note FE, what does (gracer) mean at the side. Sorry I’m technologically illiterate.

Incidentally, may I please ask your opinion. I’m a Galaxy Note fan but am reluctant to buy the Note 8. I’m not bothered about the size and prefer 5.7 over the larger sized Note 8. I’m not bothered about Bixby.

The Note FE looks like an attractive substitute; and with Oreo it would still be a valid phone for several years?

    Any thoughts please?

    Regards

    Stephen

Thanks for your time Dan. Appreciated.

This is why I still prefer Windows Mobile at least updates are universal and don’t need carriers approval. I miss my Lumia 950XL

Pulled my old S6 & S7 out of the drawer the other day to see if there were any updates. Nada. Lol at you Samsung.

Edit: Typing this on a Tab S2 8.0 which is still on sale at JB HiFi but is stuck on the April 2017 update. I’m now looking at small Chromebooks for a replacement because Google provides the updates, AFAIK.

Sick of Samsung’s late OS updates. Been a pixel/Nexus user for years and have avoided Samsung devices like the plague but unfortunately I had to purchase a tab S3 (T820) recently due to Google abandoning the tablet space. It’s been almost 5 months since my purchase and haven’t received a single security update!!! No response from Samsung customer service so far. And now the T820 is not even on the list!!!

Only ever buy outright carrier free.

Samsung just providing further reason to move to Huawei

In the past their record hasn’t been great. The P10 received monthly security updates fairly quickly after the patches were released. Didn’t receive a major OS update, as yet, but it’s testing Android 8.0 about the same timeframe as Samsung is testing Oreo for its 2017 phones as well. In the past Samsung has been better, but really, if you want OS updates in a timely manner, you’re going with phones running AOSP (e.g. former Nexus, Pixel line, etc).

Or, possibly Motorola or Nokia which are nearly AOSP and appear to be much better with updates as a result.

That’s the whole point. If they are both NOT doing it, then what’s it matter. Either way your not getting updates.

On Optus here. Who else is still on October 2017 patch with their S8?

    Omid

Same, I’m on October 1, 2017 security patch but I’ve unlocked S7 Edge. I used to get regular security patches each month, but not anymore. That’s making me really nervous when I know there are four months old security vulnerabilities on my phone and what sensitive information I have on it. Information like my credit card details, crypto wallets, etc. If one day I leave my beloved Android platform, then it would be because of these stupid update dramas. I’m reaching my breaking point when I think that I’ve been waiting for this issue to get a fix since Android… Read more »

My S8+ is also on October Security patch. According to Sammobile.com (see below) some other regions have received all updates past October (e.g. UK BTU). That tells me that *Samsung* is to blame here!!! They’re not treating all regions equally (I have an Optus branded S8+). Obviously, UK is more important to them than Australia. The unbranded XSA S8+ is also still at October security update. “Samsung is now rolling out firmware version G9500ZCU2AQL2 for the Galaxy S8 (SM-G9500) in China. It’s a minor update that brings the January 2018 security patch. It’s available for download from our firmware section.… Read more »
