The rumoured merger of the Nest and Google hardware teams is a reality today with Nest CEO Marwan Fawaz announcing the merge on the Nest blog.
The continued existence of two hardware teams, sometimes competing on different software standards, one of which, Blink, was even named the same, has been confusing but no longer. When rumours emerged of a possible merge, it came to light that hardware team members had been working with the Google hardware team already.
In his post, Mr Fawaz has said that the goal of the merge is to :
supercharge Nest’s mission: to create a more thoughtful home, one that takes care of the people inside it and the world around it. By working together, we’ll continue to combine hardware, software and services to create a home that’s safer, friendlier to the environment, smarter and even helps you save money—built with Google’s artificial intelligence and the Assistant at the core.
This fits in line with the appearance of Nest on-stage at the October Made by Google event last year, talking about using Google’s Machine Learning and Assistant in powering Nest products.
An improved range of products powered by Google can only be good, so we now have to wait to see what the future holds.
