Huawei’s second generation Android Wear watch – the Huawei Watch 2 – is getting a 2018 edition according to a new leak featuring renders and specs from Evan Blass via his @EvLeaks Twitter account.

The leak shows that the Huawei Watch 2 (2018) edition will include specs that match the original Huawei Watch 2 which originally launched last year.

The watch will feature the same Snapdragon 2100 processor, 768MB RAM and 4GB of on-board storage, as well as 1.2″ 390×390 resolution AMOLED display and 420mAh battery. The watch will get the same Bluetooth 4.1 and Wi-Fi B/G/N wireless connections and will also include GPS, eSIM and be IP68 dust/water resistant – it will even include the same sensor with accelerometer, gyroscope, barometer, heart rate, capacitance, ambient light, geomagnetic sensors on-board.

As seen above, the watch will come in the same distinctive Orange colour option that launched with the Huawei Watch 2 Sport (2017), however a new look black and lime green colour option will be offered, though it appears Huawei will be hiding the great new colour behind the black watch band.

The big news for Huawei will be shipping the 2018 edition of their smart watch with Wear OS on-board. The watch faces being offered will include the same watch faces offered with the original according to a second shot shared by Evan.

If this release goes ahead it means that Huawei will not be waiting for the new Qualcomm Snapdragon SoC – expected to be the Snapdragon 3100 – which Pankaj Kedia, Qualcomm’s senior director of wearables spoke about last week.

Evan shared no information regarding release time or pricing for the new watches, but with a new SoC on the horizon it shouldn’t be too far away.

These Huawei devices look similar to traditional watches. I guess people don’t want to be seen wearing something crazy.

But I predict smartwatch sales will start growing at the end of 2018 and keep growing exponentially until the smartwatch rivals the market penetration of phones. Then there’ll be new form factors.

Wear OS is dead for me until it gets better battery life, sun readable displays, and touchscreens that don’t go mental when in the shower. Basically, I want a Garmin running Wear OS.

    chris

Technically the OS has nothing to do with those issues but I thought smart watches died years ago. The most dissapointing tech that I can remember for a while.
They are ugly and expensive, get a real watch any day much nicer.

I love smartwatches. Notifications on my wrist. Any data I want instantly accessible. Unfortunately, Wear OS only supports CPUs that are out dated, and doesn’t have good button support. So, manufacturers are forced to use battery hogging CPUs, and battery hogging touch screens.

    chris

huh… there isn’t a newer CPU to use, there is one being released but they are using the latest CPU, it isn’t wear OS at fault from my understanding it is that there is no better CPU to use.

    Craig Mitchell

Yes. Correct. However, why hasn’t Wear OS been pushing the manufactures to make a newer CPU. All I see is Apple have a new watch CPU. Garmin have a new watch CPU. But nothing for Wear OS.

I want a “smart watch”. If I wanted a “sports watch,” I could get a cheaper, waterproof alternative with better battery life. Once again Huawei, please choose your audience.

Why even launch a new model if is just a different coat of paint.

So they can say they are still active in the smart watch market
