The ability to have Google Assistant play Movies from your Google Play Movies and TV library is getting closer with Google launching the feature in the US overnight.

The option to play your Google Play Movies & TV content is live only in the US, with our tests here in Australia ending with the Assistant telling us ‘Sorry, I can’t play from Play Movies and TV yet’. This matches with the Google Support page for ‘Play TV shows & movies using Google Home’ which lists only Netflix and Stan as compatible here in Australia.

According to Android Police who first noted the expanded capability, the function works without you needing to link your Google Play Movies & TV app. The feature works with both Rental and Purchased content as well.

It’s not live here yet, but we sure hope it will be soon.

My settings are US voice and I’ve been able to call up and play Google Play Movies content. I’ve only tested it on content I own, will try to request something I don’t later to see what happensand of i’m asked to rent / buy it.

It is hard to believe this functionality isn’t already available, but at least is should be here soon.
