Once notches started appearing it was only a matter of time before a company started upping the ante. Sharp has announced the Aquos R2 Compact and, it has two notches.

The Aquos R2 Compact has a 5.2″ 2280 x 1080 resolution 120Hz IGZO LCD display with a notch at either end. The top notch is a smaller teardrop style notch which contains the front facing 8MP camera, while the larger notch at the bottom folds around a fingerprint sensor. It’s a decent idea for fans of front mounted fingerprint sensors, without going to the extent of including an in-display fingerprint sensor.

Internally the phone runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of on-board storage and is powered by a 2,500mAh battery. On the rear of the phone is a single lens 22.6MP camera sensor with Optical and Electrical Image Stabilisation. The phone also supports Dolby Atmos sound to go along with the HDR Dolby Vision support on that IGZO display.

Google announced previously that Android 9.0 (Pie) which the phone is running supports two notches natively, and they’re on the short edge which is also within the defined ‘rules’ for notches on Android devices.

Apart from that, there’s not much more information about the phone. It’s being released by Soft Bank and like most of those phones available through them they’re seldom sold outside of Japan.

I think it looks great…… wait… what?

That quote from Jurassic Park springs to mind here.

That battery size is….. Interesting.

Notches are seriously a bad design choice. I can stand the Sharp Aquos S2 from Joybuy but two of them? And that battery is midget to last.

Ignoring the notches, what a crap battery size for a feature phone

But you can’t ignore the notches!.

I just checked the calendar, it’s not April the 1st

There you go. Those who think there’s nothing better in the world than a notch are going to flock to this phone.

But why stop at two? If a notch is so great, then surely three or four are even better.

Maybe Sharp would like to be the first to feature a notch on a TV screen. Oh yes!
