After a quiet year last, Samsung is showing some innovation this year and a report that surfaced today suggests that that innovation will continue to the Note 10.

Korean publication, ETNews has today reported that the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 will NOT have any buttons on the front or side of the device. The lacks of buttons is designed to give the phone a seamless appearance.

The new button-less design is “expected to emerge as a key technology in the smartphone market” but it is unclear just how the power “button” and volume controls will be triggered. Apparently:

Samsung has developed a technology that can turn on and off the power and increase or decrease the volume without touching the button

Samsung are hoping to have this technology ready for the Galaxy Note 10 later this year. One manufacturer’s module for keyless technology that is being considered is NDT which “is a manufacturer of keyless modules that use ForceTouch sensors to recognise the force of pressing”.

Samsung are expected to test this technology out first in their Galaxy A-series phones to gain acceptance of it and see how it fares in the public eye.

On-display fingerprint buttons have replaced physical fingerprint buttons on the backs of devices to create a smoother look and feel to the phone — surely the next logical step is to replace the physical buttons as well.

All this may well change in the lead up to the Galaxy Note 10 release, especially with it being such a new technology. Samsung held back their in-display fingerprint sensor from the Note 9 to make sure they had it right, you would assume they will do the same for the Note 10 and not put anything in that doesn’t work 100%.

Time will tell but it is good to see some innovative thinking — hopefully the technology can live up to this innovation.

My wife’s LG G6… Lovely phone, but a simple power button would be simpler and nicer that all it’s screen tap-tap tricks.

Practicality matters.
