When Google relaunched YouTube Red as YouTube Premium and YouTube Music, with a change that still confuses almost everyone I know, they announced student pricing but only for the USA. According to the Google Support page, it seems Google has quietly extended the program outside of the USA with eight new countries coming on board, including Australia and New Zealand.
Student subscriptions offer a rather hefty discount, YouTube Premium costs $8.99 AUD instead of $14.99 for a single membership that’s a 40% discount: for reference a family membership with up to 6 members is $22.99. YouTube Music is only $5.99 per month instead of $11.99 which is an impressive 50% discount, the family plan is $17.99.
Only those student studying in higher education are eligible for the discount (sorry, no high school students) and we’re not sure if that includes TAFEs in Australia. You can also only subscribe to the student plan for 4 years, so get that degree quickly. To qualify for the student pricing you must be a student of course and verify that using the SheerID identification service and you’ll also have to re-authenticate each year you subscribe.
Student pricing is available to new customers only, so if you’re already a YouTube Premium or Music subscriber you’ll have to cancel your membership and resubscribe. If you do subscribe to the student plan’s let us know how the process goes for you.

It worked for me – just had to cancel my existing subscription then resubscribe as a student.
